Vinoba Bhave University:

Vinoba Bhave University, Jharkhand came into existence as a teaching cum affiliating state university on 17th September, 1992. It fell under Jharkhand after the creation of the state on November 15, 2000. Its headquarter is Hazaribag, a town of sylvan surroundings and tranquility amid verdant forests. The Post graduate campus sprawls over 70 Acres of land on Patna-Ranchi national highway, about 5 kms from North of the town. Its territorial jurisdiction spreads all over North Chotanagpur Divison and all over state in Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Sanskrit colleges, and more than 50 affiliated colleges .It has 22 University Departments, 19 Constituent Colleges and more than 50 Affiliated Colleges.

University Department of Biotechnology: –

The University Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2004. It conducts the course of M.Sc Biotechnology and Ph.D program in Biotechnology. It aimed at high academic standards in teaching and research. Course is designed with scientific and technological approaches. The course imparts training and teaching in various disciplines of Biotechnology so as to make the students more competent towards the commercial aspects of Biotechnology. The department is well equipped with the basic and latest facilities yielding competent students who are pursuing teaching as well as research work at various institutions of India and International repute. Presently, the Department has started 2 Ad on Courses viz (1) Diploma in Forensic Science and (2) Diploma in Food Quality Assessment & Food Safety along with M.Sc. Biotechnology programme from the academic session 2016 onwards.

 

Objective:

Biotechnology has emerged as a very promising intellectual enterprise of the present century. It provides the technocratic tools to produce or modify novel products of microcosmic and macrocosmic plants, animals and microbes at industrial level. It holds a great promise in beneficial application of recent fascinating developments in genetic engineering, protein engineering, plant tissue culture, animal cell culture, stem cell biology, immunology, microbiology, bioinformatics, etc. to various sectors of social economic development containing of communicable diseases, production of biofertiliser, bioinsecticide and therapeutic chemicals. It has potentials of revolutionizing healthcare, agribusinesses and environmental diagnostics and putting the Biotechnologists on the global map.

The M.Sc Biotechnology program is designed to:

  • Develop/produce trained manpower with strong knowledge base in various disciplines of Biotechnology.
  • Prepare students to discover their latent potential and work as efficient and disciplined biotechnologists.
  • Stimulate their creative thinking to do innovative work in diverse branches of Biotechnology at national and international level.

 

 

The venue of M.Sc Biotechnology teaching: –

Presently the Post Graduate Department of Biotechnology of Vinoba Bhave University is running theory and Practical classes of M.Sc. Biotechnology course in the campus of Vinoba Bhave University,Hazaribag. It has a very friendly and peaceful environment both for boys as well as girls.

 

Laboratory: –

The University Department of Biotechnology is well equipped with its own air conditioned Central Instrumentation laboratory, Computer room with internet facility, Library, Seminar Room. The students are assigned library classes for thrice a week. In addition, V.B.U has Central Library within the campus, where students can go and use the books. Departmental library has more than 300 textbooks and manuals on diverse aspects of Biotechnology.  It also has a Smart Room with smart board and projector. It has a number of sophisticated instruments of its own such as Shaker Incubator, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, ELISA reader, PCR, UV Torch, Gel Doc, Laminar Air Flow, Cooling Centrifuge, Water Analyzer, Deep Freezer, Inverted Phase Contrast Microscope, Nano Drop Spectrophotometer, Magnetic Stirrer, Ultra Water Purifier, Bio-Safety Cabinet, CO2 Incubator, Evidence Bench, Water Bath, Vortex, Autoclave, B.O.D. Incubator, Hot air oven and others.

 

Facilities: –

There is a Canteen, Post Office as well as a branch of United Bank of India & Bank of India in the University Campus.

Eligibility for admission:

A candidate, who has passed one of the following examination from Vinoba Bhave University or an examination recognized by the university as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible to join M.Sc. course in Biotechnology.

  • B.Sc. (Honours) or equivalent examination under 10 + 2 +3 pattern of education in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Botany, Chemistry and Zoology, MLT, with a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate.
  • B.Sc. (General) with (a) Botany, Zoology, Chemistry or (b) Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (having Biology at +2 level), with a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate.
  • Graduate in Agriculture / Forestry/ Veterinary/ Medical Sciences with a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate.

 

Selection Procedure: –

The admission to M.Sc. Biotechnology course shall be made on the basis of performance of the candidate in the Entrance Aptitude Test (EAT) followed by counseling. For admission against NRI/NRI sponsored/ special payment seats, EAT is not required but the sponsored candidates shall be required to appear at Special Test including Viva-voce on a date to be decided by the department.

 

Nature of Test: –

The Entrance Test will be conducted to test the knowledge of the candidates from various disciplines of Biotechnology (covering 80% questions of degree level), and mathematics including Statistics, Physics and Computer (Covering 20% questions of +2 level). Questions will be of objectives / Multiple choice/ Fill up the blanks type. There shall be negative marking and half of the total marks of each question will be deducted for each wrong answer. The test shall be of 90 minutes duration.

 

Course:

The M.Sc Biotechnology with Diploma in Forensic Science / Food Quality Assessment & Food Safety is a full time Dual Degree programme which is completed in four semesters. Students have option to select anyone of the Diploma Programme which will be taught in 2nd & 3rd Semesters. At the end of each semester there shall be University examination/ Internal Assessment. The course is designed in context with the current Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) as per latest UGC guidelines.

  1. A National Workshop on “Hands on training in Biotechnology, Emerging application and the way forward” from 24th-30th March,2012, sponsored by University Grants Commission, jointly organized by Department of Biotechnology, St.Columba’s College, Hazaribag & Post Graduate Department of Biotechnology, Vinoba Bhave University, St.Columba’s College, Hazaribag in association with niTZa biologicals(P) Ltd, Hyderabad.
  2. A National Workshop on “ Calibration and Operations of Instruments and Glasswares” from 28th-30th January, 2013 organized by Department of Biotechnology, St.Columba’s College, Hazaribag & Post Graduate Department of Biotechnology, Vinoba Bhave University, St.Columba’s College, Hazaribag in association with niTZa biologicals(P) Ltd, Hyderabad.
  1. A Special Lecture by Dr.R.S.Singh, Director, State Forensic Laboratory, Ranchi was organized on 08-08-2016.
  2. A National Conference on Harmony with Nature in Context of Resource Conservation and Climate Change was Organized from 22-24, October, 2016, in collaboration with University Department of Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology & Geology.
  3. A special lecture was organized on 30_ 11-2016 on recent aspects of “Environmental Biotechnology” by Anshu Mali, Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad (Formely, Indian School of Mines).
  1. Chancellor Lecture Series was organized by the Department of Biotechnology on 24thJanuary, 2017, Keynote  Speaker: – Dr. Abhay Sharma, Principal Scientist from Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology, New Delhi, delivered lecture on topic “Epigenetic Inheritance: Effect Of Dietary And Other Environmental Factors Across Generations”.
  2. Two day workshop was organized in the department from 3rd-4th November, 2017, on career Readiness, resource person was Mr. Arup Sinha, M/S Arijeet, Ahmedabad.
  3. A three day Hands on Training cum Workshop was organized in the department from 25th-27th November, 2017, on topic “Bacterial Transformation & Screening”, resource person was Dr. Swapnil Sinha, NIPER, Guwahati.
  1. Seminar on the topic “ Insights into the Role of Core Histone Tail Acetylation in Chromatin Accessibility” was held on 24-02-18. Speaker was Lakshmi Narayan Mishra, Post Doc Fellow, University of Rochester, U.S.A.
  1.  Seminar on the topic “IPR” was held on 10-03-18. Speaker was Mr. Deepak Kumar, from  Evalueserve/ Stellerix, Gurgaon.
  2.  Seminar on the topic “ Soft Skill Development and Employability Enhancement” was held on 13-04-18. Spekaer was Mr.Sudhir Sadanand from Chennai.

Course

The M.Sc Biotechnology course is a full time programme to be covered in four semester of two academic session. The first part of the course shall be called M.Sc. (previous) consisting of 1st and 2nd semesters, and second part M.Sc. (final) consisting of 3rd and 4th semesters. At the end of each semester there shall be University examination/ Internal Assessment
